The AMRR #101 is a GE 44
Ton Diesel, that was donated to the Timber Heritage Association in
2004 by the MeadWestvaco Company in DeRidder,
Louisiana.
In 2004 THA had it delivered by rail (BNSF),
using a company called Specialized Rail Transport, to Richmond,
California. The Levin Terminal donated use of its cranes
and storage space before THA could have it trucked to Arcata in
early 2005.
MeadWestvaco replaced the original D-1700
engines with Cat 3406B Gen Set engines in 1998-1999. They used
the locomotive until 2000 and only put about 2000 hours on the new
engines.
THA volunteers have restored the Diesel
to about 80% operating condition. The horns, bell, and
windshield wipers now work. The sanders were fixed,
the shutters repaired, and the cab and headlights made operational
with new wiring and some help from General
Electric.
Other Diesels formerly owned by the AMRR were 44
tonners,#102 and 104. We don't know if there was a #103 or
what happened to it. The 102 was scrapped in Richmond, CA by
the scrapyard that owned it in 2003. The GE 44 ton # 104
is owned by the Roots of Motive Power in Willets, CA. It is
operational.
The AMRR #101 is stored inside at an industrial
site in Arcata, CA.
